AC Milan vs Barcelona Preview Match

March 28, 2012 7:45 PM BST
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza — Milano

Team News
AC Milan

This biggest news for AC Milan is the recent announcement that Thiago Silva will be out for up to 4 weeks with a thigh strain, thereby missing both legs of the Champions League quarter final against reigning champions Barcelona. His absence cannot be underestimated, especially given Milan's already lengthy injury list.

Mark van Bommel is suspended after his yellow card against Arsenal at the Emirates.
Gattuso has returned to training but was not named in the Champions League squad for the second half of the season as the club were not sure if he would return in time to feature.

Seedorf, Aquilani and Boateng could all play a part after being rested for the most part at the weekend.
probable lineups : Abbiati, Antonini, Bonera, Mexes, Zambrotta, Emanuelson, Seedorf, Nocerino, Boateng, Robinho, Ibrahimovic. (4-3-1-2).

Barcelona

Adriano joins longer-term absentees Villa, Afellay, Fontas and Abidal on the sidelines, so Carlos Puyol could take over at left back, if Pep Guardiola sticks with a 4-man backline, of course.

Otherwise, Barcelona have a full-strength squad, and only Puyol has the worry of a yellow card incurring a suspension for the second leg.
probable lineups : Valdes, Alves, Pique, Mascherano, Puyol, Iniesta, Busquets, Xavi, Cuenca, Messi, Fabregas. (4-3-3).

Prediction
These sides lined up in the group stage of the competition earlier in the season, with a total of 9 goals being scored in 2 meetings. Milan scored 2 on each occasion, holding Barca to a 2-2 draw at the Nou Camp, before losing 3-2 back at the San Siro. More goals would seem likely here once again.

The Italians have lost only 1 of their last 10 matches - the second leg of the last round away at Arsenal, and that came after a resounding 4-0 win over the Londoners in the first leg. The home side are used to playing on their pitch, which is not in the best condition, and that may disrupt Barcelona's passing game, as it did Arsenal's.

However, Barcelona are a class above and should be able to adapt to the conditions. They have won their last 9 matches in all competitions, and seem to have overcome any doubts there were midway through the season about their indifferent away form, having scored at least 2 in each of and won their last 5 away from home. The San Siro will, though, be a difficult place to go and Milan will hope to keep the game to a score where they have a chance when the second leg comes around. A high scoring draw could well be on the cards again.
AC Milan  2 - 2  Barcelona
