Rayo Vallecano vs Atletico Madrid Preview: Spain Primera Division Jornada 34 2011/12

Atleti's away form has been very poor of late with three consecutive defeats, but a trip just down the road to Vallecas may be kinder and only a third away win of the season could be on the cards for Simone's men.

Rayo Vallecano

Jose Ramon Sandoval has a selection headache due to a number of loan arrangements with Atlético Madrid. Joel, Jorge Pulido and Diego Costa are all on-loan to Rayo from their city neighbours and are therefore ineligible to face their parent club.

Sandoval also has problems in defence as Mikel Labaka broke his jaw in the 4-1 defeat to Valencia in midweek so Pape Diamanka may have to deputise alongside Alejandro Arribas at centre-back.

The one positive note is the return of Piti from suspension so he should take his place on the right with Raul Tamudo expected to be handed a rare start in Costa's usual role through the middle.

probable lineups : Cobeño, Casado, Diamanka, Arribas, Tito, Movilla, Fuego, Armenteros, Michu, Piti, Tamudo. (4-2-3-1).
Atletico Madrid

Diego Simone by contrast can welcome back Miranda, Eduardo Salvio and Mario Suarez after all three missed the 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid through suspension.

Champions League football now seems beyond Atleti as they remain eight points behind Malaga with just six games remaining, but a return to the Europa League remains a strong possibility either through a top-six finish or winning the competition itself.

Radamel Falcao's goal against Real took his tally for the season to 29 in all competitions and the Colombian has now scored a staggering 49% of Atelti's league goals, a higher ratio than anyone in the division.

probable lineups : Courtois, Juanfran, Miranda, Godín, Luis, Suárez, Gabi, Diego, Adrián, Koke, Falcao. (4-2-3-1).

Prediction
Diego Costa has been such a key factor in Rayo's strength going forward since his arrival towards the end of January that his presence will be sorely missed by the hosts.

Add to that the loss of Pulido and Joel, plus the injury to Labaka, to an already shaky backline that has conceded four goals in three of its last five games, and Falcao and Adrian could run riot.

Atleti's away form has been very poor of late with three consecutive defeats, but a trip just down the road to Vallecas may be kinder and only a third away win of the season could be on the cards for Simone's men.
Rayo Vallecano  1 - 2  Atletico Madrid
